Pop Champagne

For once it was what America wanted. Instead of a rematch of the 2009 World Series, it is a match up of two teams generally on the outside looking in. Hell one team had never won a playoff series. All that changed Friday night when the Texas Rangers ousted the New York Yankees in six games. Follow that with the Giants road victory in Philadelphia some 24 hours later and you've got a Fall Classic with two teams known less for winning and more for whiny superstars (looking at you Barry and A-Rod) and years of failure.

Parody is what every league looks for and this year, regardless of the outcome, a suprise champion will be crowned. And that's the way it ought to be.

Use Your Head

"It's football. You've got a lot of good players, where you think one thing, and another thing can happen in a split-second. My split-second decision was to be aggressive and not wait for it." - Brandon Meriweather (Pro Football Talk)

It has been well documented that younger players tend to make dumb plays. However, the repeated stupidity of Brandon Meriweather on Sunday is simply inexcusable. With head and neck injuries occurring at an alarming rate, it is time for the NFL to suspend players for these violent and unnecessary cheap shots.

Even before Meriweather lowered the boom on the Ravens Todd Heap, there had already been two significant head and neck injuries this past weekend. The Eagles DeSean Jackson was leveled by Falcon Defensive Back Dunta Robinson just minutes before the incident in Foxboro. Jackson left the game with a "severe concussion" while Robinson remained on the ground before finally getting off the field under his own power. Watching the video is scary and violent but with Robinson, at least the intent to play the game within the rules was there. Not so much for young Bang Clock Brandon.

Aside from the hit on Heap, Meriweather was seen launching himself helmet-first at opponents multiple times during Sunday's game. This behavior is simply unacceptable. Will a punitive fine serve justice for a kid who just doesn't get it? No. If the NFL is going to suspend its players for conduct outside of work, they need to start holding them accountable at work. Yes, football is inherently dangerous and everyone who plays knows the risk they take every time they step on the field. That risk shouldn't be heightened because a few players can't control their aggressive behavior. The NFL needs to send a message and hold players accountable for their actions. Unless of course they want d-backs runnin' around like little kids.

Check out our thoughts on the head shots and everything else NFL on the Sports Round Table Thursday from 8-10 PM on www.wdisam.com.

You Stay Classy Texas Rangers

For those of you who don't know, the Texas Rangers won their first playoff series in franchise history last night. The tradition in baseball is a champagne shower after a playoff series win. The Rangers most valuable hitter, Josh Hamilton, is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. Afraid of being around the bubbly, and a potential relapse, Hamilton was anxious to enter the clubhouse after the win. His teammates, cognisant of Hamilton's past, made the classiest move possible. When Hamilton entered the club house, to his surprise the team was bathing in:

What Playground Is This

WHERE THE HELL IS THIS? What playground can you go to and see Jenna Bentley and her smoke show friend mount each other and make out? Someone please tell me, because I will be the guy with the sunglasses and fake mustache on the seesaw.

Poetic Justice

The Philadelphia Phillies traded away the most dominant force in last year's postseason. A left handed pitcher who went a mere 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA.

What did they do for an encore? Traded away Cliff Lee, and got back the best right handed pitcher in the game. Like Lee, Roy Halladay never pitched in the post season until his first year with the Phillies. Also like Lee, Halladay didn't disappoint.

The 33 year old Halladay tossed the second no hitter in playoff history. Not a bad way to start a much belated postseason career. Halladay did it hours after Philadelphia's favorite son of last postseason, Lee, went seven innings giving up one run, and striking out 10 for Texas.

Call me a fan of irony or poetic justice, but I'm rooting for a Phillies vs. Rangers World Series strictly for the Cliff Lee vs. Roy Halladay match up.
